KC09: 9N/10D - SANGLA JOURNEY TO HIDDEN HIMACHAL PRADESH

This trip can be tackled only after Rohtang Pass re-opens (after mid-June)


DAY 1: CHANDIGARH TO NARKANDA

Come at Chandigarh & enjoy a pleasant drive to Narkanda, a hill station situated just 1.5kms from the popular Hatu peak. The drive is approximately 5 to 6 hours. Check-in at the hotel. Spend night at Narkanda.


Day 2: Narkanda to Sangla

After having an initial breakfast, we depart for Sangla. Check-in at Sangla Camps to begin your tour in traversing the picturesque Sangla Valley, with Sangla Camps hospitality.


Day 3: Visit Batseri - Rakchham Villages - Glacier Walk

After breakfast, stroll to Batseri village, with its latest wooden houses and look the stunning wood carvings of the Lord Badrinarayan temple. After the temple visit, feel a stroll on the glacier. After that, walkl along the Baspa River to the picturesque Rakchham village. Have packed lunch along the way by the magnificiant river at a location where you can look the breathtaking Kinner Kailash Mountain, that is popularly known as the winter home of the Lord Shiva, Hindu God. Spend night at Sangla Camps.


DAY 4: CHITKUL VILLAGE - NAGASTI

After breakfast, leave by 9.30 a.m. to drive to Chitkul (23km), the final Indian village on the Indo-Tibet border, from where a short stroll (2.5km) takes you to Nagasti, the last civilian point. Come back to the camp for lunch. After lunch, go for a relaxed walk to Hurba which is popular for its spring water sources.

Or get yourself involved in some fun activities at the campsite – rock climbing, river crossing, rappelling, and flying fox. Spend night at Kinner Camps.


DAY 5: Sangla to Kalpa

After taking tasty breakfast, check-out from the hotel & move to Kalpa, by means of Recong Peo, which is the District Headquarter of Kinnaur. Kalpa was once a favourite spook of Lord Dalhousie. Come at Kalpa & check-in to the hotel. Back in the days Kalpa was known as Chini during the time it was the Regional Capital. Kalpa has varied little in the previous 500 years. It is also said that as & when Lord Dalhousie desired to take a break from his frantic schedule in Shimla, he would arrive here on horseback. Each & every corner of Kalpa confronts Jorkanden & the Kinner Kailash Peak, that is considered as one of the legendary homes of Lord Shiva; by its side is a 79 foot rock manifestation that mirrors a Shivlinga that varys colour as the day rolls, & is seen to the unveiled eye on a clear day. After lunch, relax in the hotel. In the evening, go to a Buddhist Gompa. Relish mouth watering dinner & spend night at Kalpa.


DAY 6: Kalpa to Nako

Wake up early to eyewitness an amazing sunrise cleaning the Kinner Kailash peaks. Post breakfast, check-out from your hotel in Kalpa & a pleasant drive to Nako. En-route, take a short interval at the Khab sangam that is the meeting of the Sutlej and Spiti rivers. Nako is slated to be declared a heritage village and is made around a tiny lake. It has a prime and oldest Buddhist Gompa that is 1000 yrs old, & a tiny temple. A footprint-like impression on a rock is assigned to the saint Guru Padmasambhava. Spend night at Sangla Camp, Nako.


Day 7: Nako-Tabo-Dhankar Gompa - Kaza

Welcome to Spiti Valley – with few indications of vegetation. Yet, this land make visitors speechless with the savage raw beauty of its landscape. Post breakfast, begin the pleasant drive to Kaza. On the route, explore the very old village of Tabo, that is located on the left bank of the river Spiti. It is the seat of one of the most popular Buddhist Monasteries, considered next to the Tholong Gompa in Tibet. It is also designated as the ‘Ajanta of Himalayas’. It was built in 996 AD – not only in Spiti but in the entire of the Tibetan Buddhist world, it is known as Chogs – Khor [‘Doctrinal Enclave’ or ‘Doctrinal Circle’. It is a complex that holds 23 Chortens, 9 Temples, a Monk’s Chamber & an addition that houses the Nun’s Chamber. On the absolute rock-face above the archipelago are a sequence of caves, used as dwellings by the monks, & incorporates an assembly hall. The monastery holds huge number of scriptures & pieces of art, stucco & wall paintings. There is also a contemporary gompa & painting school discovered by the Dalai Lama. After taking delicous lunch, check-out from Tabo.

On the way to Kaza, go to Dhankar Gompa, the conventional capital of Spiti, that sits attractive on a hilltop. The hill-top fort that fails to spot the Spiti Valley also utilized to serve as a jail in the ancient days. At present, more than 160 Lamas live here. A sculpture of Dhyan Buddha, where four entire figures of Buddha sit back to back, is the prime attraction of this older than 7th century monastery. Also explore the Giu monastery to look the self-preserved mummy of a Buddhist monk.

Proceed the drive to Kaza – the capital of Spiti Valley. Come at Kaza & check-in to your hotel. Relish yummy dinner & spend night at Kaza.


DAY 8: Explore Kaza

After an initial breakfast by 7 a.m., leave for a short trip to Ki Monastery. Located at the foot of sharp ridges & on the left bank of the Spiti river is the Ki Monastery, that is the largest Gelupa sect monastery in Spiti. Its hilltop spot points to a post thirteenth century construction. The three-storied structure comprises substancially of storage rooms at the bottom level, while the middle floor houses the assembly hall i.e. Dukhang, & the uppermost floor has other temple & the Head Lama’s quarters on single side of an open terrace. The extraordinary wealth of Ki Gompa lies in its group of ‘Thangkas’ reclaimed with difficulty from the shattering raids of the Sikhs & the Dogars in the 19th century. Hundreds of Lamas get their godly training in this monastery. The monastery is also popular for its old books & murals. From here, a memorable drive takes you into the grazing country of Kibber. From Kibber, the grazing lands are outspread over hundreds of square kms. Come back to Kaza for delicious dinner & rejuvenating night stay.


DAY 9: Kaza - Kumzum La Pass - Manali

After an initial tasty breakfast by 6:30 a.m., check-out from the hotel & take a pleasant drive to Manali by the means of the Kunzum La Pass, that is, at 4590 metres, is the tallest pass on the Spiti Lahaul road. Set foot on Manali in the evening. Spend night at Manali.


DAY 10: Manali - Chandigarh

After an initial breakfast, checkout from the hotel & leave for Chandigarh (9-10 hours). Mouth watering lunch is on the way. Come at Chandigarh and leave back home, taking remarkable memories with you. Alternately, spend night at Chandigarh and snatch the next day flight back home.
